WELCOME!
U.C.A.T. is the statewide resource for Assistive Technology information, equipment review, assessment and modification, and the exploration of assistive technology funding options. Our Visions and Values can be summed up with six words: Teamwork, Innovation, Expertise, Excellence, Respect, and Accountability.
Our Mission
To enhance human potential through facilitating the application of assistive
technologies for persons with disabilities.
How do I access services in my area?
The Utah Center for Assistive Technology acts as the hub or center point
of assistive technology services available statewide. There are branch
resources available throughout Utah including services which are coordinated
with other State agencies to ensure that devices and assistance are accessible
to all Utahns who need them.
What is Assistive Technology?
Assistive or Adaptive Technology according to the definition proposed in the Assistive Technology Act of 1998 is as follows:
Any products, devices, or equipment whether acquired commercially, modified, or customized, that are used to maintain, increase, or to improve the functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities.
In short, Assistive Technology products empower people with disabilities to accomplish daily living tasks as well as to assist them in communication, education, work or recreation activities, and, in essence, to help them achieve greater independence and enhance their overall quality of life. Assistive Technology devices can help to improve physical or mental functioning, to overcome a disorder or impairment, to help prevent the worsening of a condition, to strengthen a physical or emotional weakness, to help improve a person's capacity to learn, or even, to replace a missing limb. Assistive Technology Services support people with disabilities and their caregivers, to help them select, acquire, or to use adaptive devices. Such services include functional evaluations, training on devices, product demonstration, and equipment purchasing or leasing.
